I find George Lucas's philosophy, which distinguishes between pleasure and joy, pretty wise. Pleasure is a self-centered, short-lived emotion that peaks very high, yet the next time you need twice as much to reach the same level, whereas joy may not rise as high, but it can be recalled in memory and stays with you long after. As he points out, if you try to sustain a peak level of pleasure, you're ultimately doomed.
